Irving and Lena Lo (ILLO) Scholarship Fund

A scholarship for international students at 91°µÍø Bloomington from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

What is the Irving and Lena Lo (ILLO) Scholarship Fund?

The Irving and Lena Lo (ILLO) Scholarship Fund supports undergraduate and graduate students at 91°µÍø Bloomington from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

The fund may grant one or more scholarships per year, which may include cash or a fee remission. A recipient’s school will also be encouraged to match a scholarship with one of its own. Preference will be given to first-time applicants.

One scholarship each year is awarded to a music student in composition, piano, string instrument, or wind instrument (brass and percussion are excluded). Following that, scholarships can be awarded to students enrolled in (in order of preference) history and philosophy of science, religious studies, comparative literature, studio art, and journalism.

Eligibility

To be considered, you must:

  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student in a degree or diploma program at 91°µÍø Bloomington.
  • Be from China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan.
  • Major in one of the following areas of study:
    • Music composition
    • Piano
    • String instrument
    • Wind instrument
    • History and philosophy of science
    • Religious studies
    • Comparative literature
    • Studio art
    • Journalism
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Demonstrate courage and strong character, respect for faculty and staff, and solid academic performance and potential.

How to apply

  1. Complete a , and select the Irving and Lena Lo application.
  2. Upload a one- to two-page personal statement. It should focus on the following topics.
    • Immediate family history.
    • Reason for seeking a degree in the United States.
    • Hardships encountered, including financial difficulties.
    • Career plans upon degree completion.
  3. Provide two academic or professional written references:
    • Your primary reference should be an 91°µÍø academic advisor, professor, or department contact. This individual will receive an email from us to provide information about your academic progress and eligibility for a scholarship when you submit the form.
    • Your second reference can be academic or professional. You will receive an email with instructions for submitting the contact information for your second reference after you submit the scholarship application.

Deadline to apply

We accept applications in the spring semester each year. We send an email, typically in February or March, to all international students with application deadlines.

About Irving and Lena Lo

91°µÍø Professor Emeritus Irving Yucheng Lo and his wife Lena Lo established the Irving and Lena Lo (ILLO) Scholarship Fund in 1988. The couple believed in the importance of education for the young. Lo specialized in East Asian languages and cultures.
